ECH to high-speed test new 5G network

June 10, 2025

The England’s Connected Heartland (ECH) programme team is thrilled to share we’ll be hosting a private demonstration on Monday 16th June at Millbrook Proving Ground! This milestone event will showcase the high-speed demonstrations of our 5G Mobile Private Network, soon to be deployed along the Bicester–Bletchley section of East West Rail.

This event highlights how our ECH programme is enabling pioneering digital infrastructure within the critical OxCam Corridor, addressing the challenge of passenger connectivity across regional rail networks.

What we’ll be doing:

  • Live testing of the 5G Standalone infrastructure, replicating all solution components from the Radio Access network to the train hardware for the rail network. (We’ll be testing this using an EV car driving around at 100Mph, to replicate the speed of a train!)
  • Simulated handover between private network, public Mobile Network Operator coverage and satellite connectivity
  • Observations of how the system performs under realistic rail operating conditions
  • Project updates and summary demonstrations of key outcomes

This event will bring together targeted stakeholders across our project teams and government who are shaping the UK’s next generation of connectivity. While this event is invitation only, we’ll be capturing photography and video at the event, which we can’t wait to share with you. Until then, read more about our 5G railway project.
